AAPT-AAS Winter Meeting
From ComPADRE Wiki
Hi All, I want to make sure that I can get bookmarks to give away during the workshop. The booth won't be open yet. Any suggestions? Cathy

Suggestions for the ComPADRE Booth
Fluid consensus - 3+ laptops plus 1 projecting comPADRE features. Needs:
- 4+ Laptops
- Projector Screen [Susana mentions we could Rent or Buy]
- Slide Show
- Arata Orders
- Dr. Hakim and Matt came up with the idea of having a 'Scavenger Hunt' type activity for people to participate in at the booth. Matt is currently writing up a 20 Questions that can be used for this. It will focus on getting the User to go through the main areas of comPADRE to answer these questions and hopefully learn something in the process. As an incentive for this activity, Matt would like to offer five 1 gig jump drives with the comPADRE logo. All entries who successfully complete the questions and answer them correctly will be put into the drawing for the drives.
- Lyle - We currently have invested in a few jump drives that are either 128 or 256. I suggest we use these :)
- Warren - I still have 25 of these drives that are 128 MB each. Any suggestions for what I should do with them?
- Caroline - I love this idea, Matt! Kudos to your creative brain. I volunteer to help draft questions and tasks for the participants. I have in my posession twenty 128-mg ComPADRE flash drives. This gives us a total of about 40-45. I suggest we use these as the prizes, but also have a drawing for a "grand prize".....something like an external hard drive, an I-POD Nano, possibly a funky new electronic gadget. We could also have the participants find some of our collaborators, get their game board stamped, and get the answer to a simple question, like "How is ComPADRE connected to the National Science Digital Library"? This way they also get an overview of the professional scope of the project, which could enhance our credibility among folks who haven't heard of us.
- Susana (18 Nov 2006) -- My suggestion is to give away the 128 MB drives at the workshops - people will be paying to attend those, so they might as well get something. Then for the booth drawing offer one expensive gadget - an MP3 player or an external drive or BOSE headphones. 1GB thumb drives are cheap -- $16-$22 retail and hence not sufficient incentive to enter a drawing (sorry).
- Matt - I totally agree, I am just not sure of how much we are looking to spend for a grand prize drawing. I think an iPod mp3 player would be a great idea.
- Bruce - Does anyone know if we can spend NSF money to buy a give-away MP3 player?

Ideas for Materials
- Susana and Matt discussed visual materials in Syracuse. Matt suggests the booth be presented with one large banner as a backdrop, and 2 standee type banners, 1 on each side of the booth. The standee banners could display information about comPADRE and also upcoming comPADRE features.
- Susana (18 Nov 2006): - One backdrop banner and the standee banners should be non-time sensitive material --unless they're the not permanent kind.
- A new comPADRE postcard with up to date information and utilizing the current comPADRE look and feel for people to take with them once they are finished.
- Susana -- the up-todate information we have, but we need new graphics Matt.
- Matt - What size then? 4x6? I can try and whip something up for postcard purposes.
- Susana -- the up-todate information we have, but we need new graphics Matt.
- Caroline - Susana has an idea for an 8-page booklet to hand out to general audiences. The inside back page of the booklet would have a pocket for putting audience-specific promotional materials. She envisions the booklet telling all about ComPADRE, its mission, its place in the NSDL, its community building potential, and features which cross all collections. Then, for example, a teacher of high school physics and astronomy would take bookmarks for PhysicsFront, Astronomy Center, and PTEC. A professor of upper-level undergrad physics courses might take a bookmark for Quantum Exchange and PER. We are checking into costs for such a venture, which may determine its doability.
- Susana (18 Nov 2006): we need to add bookmarks for PER and PTEC -- so... need to get the editors of those collections to think about what they want their bookmark to look like and say. (like ASAP).

WORKSHOPS
- Caroline - We are considering giving out 128-mg flash drives to our workshop participants in Seattle. One thing we had discussed was loading the flash drives with relevant files to help acquaint users with specific collections: tutorial, "how-to-submit", a welcome letter from the editor, etc. This could be a great way to help promote the collections with audiences we know are already interested in using them. It will involve the creation of documents/materials. Any ideas or thoughts?
