Questions
As part of this year's reports, editors were asked to include questions and comments about technical issues, project issues, other collections, etc. These are listed below:
[edit]
Cathy Mader, Careers
- Technical Question
- Since the societies are effectively sharing content that is currently on their website, just not in as "nice" of a format, how can they share the content? In other words, is there a way for them to bring the employer map content back to their site?
[edit]
Vince Kuo, PER-Central
- Technical Questions
- How do we get newly published PRST-PER and AJP PER articles automatically cataloged as new items?
- Can we create a survey to gauge the temperature of the PER community on what their likes and dislikes are about the collection? (Answer: Absolutely ~~)
- Questions for Editors
- How do you maintain and increase traffic?
- Have you done individual promotions for you collection? If so, in what venues and capacity?
- Project Question
- It seems like there is a large disparity in the volume of usage between the collections. Perhaps that is unavoidable and the consequences of the differences in audience. Would it be helpful to try to minimize this discrepancy somehow? Just a thought without any concrete solutions.
[edit]
Cathy Ezrailson, Physics Front
- Would like a map of user locations, email list (Map would be pretty full. Email list for whom? Bruce)
- Quick Capture of user info
- Blog for user feedback (Discussions? Bruce)
- More Web Seminars – hosted by AAPT on topics of interest and need for all instructional levels.
- More collaborations with other editors on workshops and papers.
- Associating a blog with the front and somehow mapping automatically where the registered users are located, their email address, etc so that focused surveys or other communications might be accomplished.
- I also would love to work more closely with some of the other editors, perhaps in a capacity of bridging their collections' offerings to the pre-college classroom –
- maybe enlisting (or unleashing) a "physics literacy corps” of teachers and researchers not only around the DUSEL topics but others.
- If we could build a sustainable collaborative environment....
[edit]
Taha Mzoughi, Physics Source
I love the relations.
- Is there a way, for editors only, to sort of dump a bunch of items that have the same relation instead of having to do them one item at a time.
- The relation nicely identifies whether an item is in Compadre. It would be nice if, once you add a relation, it tells you if the item is in your particular library.
- The relation does not say anything about an item that is not in Compadre. Even though I was using items that I have link checked previously, it will be nice if the check is made giving the option to the editor to clone the item to one of the items in the relation.
- Tell me which hurdles if any, we need to overcome to launch the library.
- Let us agree on a final interface and functionality.
- Let us make a time-lined action plan.
[edit]
Bruce Mason, PSRC
- Technical Questions
- Should we revisit the organization of the detail page? Move tabs now at the bottom?
- Is the workflow as efficient as possible? It would be good to have items not drop out of the flow as one works on them. (This is a special feature for administrators.)
- Can we paginate the workflow pages?
- Questions for Editors
- Are there any recurring problems with the records created by our catalogers?
[edit]
John Stewart, PTEC
- Technical Questions
- Could we revisit the education vocabulary to make is better match the needs of PTEC?
- Could we provide more non-text materials, such as images and videos?
- Can we protect content so that only selected users can see it? (Yes)
- Is there a way to index external PTEC member pages so that there is not a need to maintain two web sites?
- How should one associate materials submitted by members so that users can easily access these materials?
- Questions for Editors (and Technical)
- I would like to link targeted examples from other collections of interest to those involved in teacher preparation. I would like for this to be more explicit than a simple search of the other collection.
[edit]
Bruce Mason, Quantum
- How does uComp want to use the simulations available on the Quantum Exchange?
My first response is that UCOMP needs to have a links to these simulations and perhaps some linking back to UCOMP.
I am not clear on the status of the common searching (tags, vocabulary, etc.)
Dave Winch
[edit]
Dave Donnelly, Student
- Technical Questions
- We could use help designing user surveys.
- Questions for Editors
- What methods are you using to bring users to your collection?
- Requests for the Project
- Technical updates would be helpful so that we know what the technical team is doing. Sometimes requests seem to get lost, so if we knew they were working hard on something else, we could have a better idea of how our collection needs fit in with the overall priorities of the library.
[edit]
Ramon Torres-Isea, Advanced Labs
- Technical Questions
- The advisory board recommends that the process of uploading and cataloguing materials be made even simpler by providing a batch mode for these processes. Is this possible?
- Are there any software tools available to ease the load of Associate Editors?
- Questions for Editors
- Has your collection provided services for advertising funding opportunities? If so, what are your experiences? Would you recommend doing so?
- Has your collection ever hosted a professional conference site? What are your recommendations to entice the visitors that come to register for the conference to explore your site?
- Do you have any recommendations to motivate and reward Associate Editors?
