ComPADRE Editor Meeting, 3/26/2009
Present: Bruce, Cathy Mader, Vince, Anne, Dave, Ed, John, Wolfgang, Mario, Caroline, Taha, Ramon
Welcome and Updates: Around the table – What’s new with your collection, or life?
Bruce – Today is my daughter’s 15th birthday.
Dave – Son recently turned 13 so he has two teenagers, as well as an exchange student from Thailand. The Nucleus has student assistant editors going.
Dave and Wolfgang are interested in blogging from the Middle School Portal. (URLs: http://expertvoices.nsdl.org/connectingnews/, http://expertvoices.nsdl.org/middle-school-math-science/)
Anne – STP is live. Yea!
Wolfgang – There is now a client relationship between EJS and the digital library. While running EJS, there is a button to pull up a catalog from the digital library catalog, download to the desktop, and edit. This is very exciting for distribution and as a potential “Learning Platform”.
John – The PTEC conference is over and the proceedings have been posted. His daughter’s team won the Arkansas state basketball championship.
We should have a call about the conference interface with Gabe et al.
Updates and Comments:
Privacy Policy:
Wolfgang – There should be more information about community opt-in and what users can share. More personal information will be available to the community. In general there should be more discussion of personal information.
Taha - This is legalese. Perhaps it would be more readable if there were divisions and pointers or separate pages.
Bruce – This is legalese. Changes should not be a problem with IRB.
Caroline – Is there a way to be more proactive for determining age (12 & under)?
Wolfgang – Suggested we set up a Parental Control certificate.
Detail Page:
Wolfgang – Would like to see the editor options show up in a different color to make them obviously different.
Ramon – Liked that this made the user contributions more obvious. (Question – Is there more that we might do?)
Vince – The control menu shows up for editors of different collections so that they can pull the materials into their own collection.
Everyone wants to roll this out.
Repository:
Everyone felt that it should be clearer when there are multiple documents on the repository page. In many cases everything but the main document are below the fold. Suggestions:
- Change “Associated Documents” to something else
- Make the top wording about multiple documents larger and linked below.
- Have an index of materials available.
- Have editors control of the default view on the repository pages so that they can determine what is initially open or closed, whether or not an index is displayed, etc. (John also wants more of this control on the home page and the detail pages.)
- Create larger and more obvious icons rather than the current, small +’s and –‘s. Perhaps open and closed book or folder icons.
Filing Cabinets: Organization of Content (You'll need to be logged in)
John – Is it possible to include header and footer text for a file folder?
Bruce – Header is there, footer is not.
Ramon – We might get more use of the interface that allows users to copy the materials to their own filing cabinet if the copy box is at the top of the page. Perhaps put this on the right.
Bruce – We have discussed creating a “Select all” option so that all items from a folder can be copied. This might also encourage the use of the copy option.
Caroline – Making two URLs available, one for logged in users and one for non-logged in users is great for sharing. She has started using this on Twitter.
Vince – Can we copy full tree structures?
Bruce – There may be intellectual property issues with this.
Featured File Folders: (bottom of the right-hand column)
John – Interested in Featured Filing Cabinets. We need to put together a 1 page tutorial on featured file cabinets.
John – Interested in having a little more control over the features on the home page. He would like to be able to set the number of features that appear (and be able to change this number) and which features are always available and which rotate on page loads.
Wolfgang – Perhaps create a featured file folder and put in others’ file folders in one folder to control what is featured and how it is displayed.
File Folders Landing Page:
AAPT Poster Session – Who has submitted an abstract?
John, Ed, Wolfgang, Harvey, Bruce (2), Vince, Dave(?),
ComPADRE Project Meeting(?)
We discussed the annual ComPADRE project meeting, which has been at the end of June the last couple of yearss
Taha – Combining this with the summer AAPT meeting might be good.
Ramon – Will be very swamped and won’t be able to attend anything extra at the AAPT meeting. He would prefer June and feels the meeting helps with development of his collection.
Wolfgang – The New Faculty Workshop is in late June so several of us will already be there.
Vince – Doesn’t have preferences.
Dave – Is freer earlier in the summer than later.
John – Has a Noyce conference about that time.
Supporting Materials:
Resources that ComPADRE are now hosting: Physics Classroom - http://www.physicsclassroom.com/ Absolute Zero - http://staging.compadre.org/repository/absolutezero/
Other Business?
Taha – Was looking for ComPADRE presentation materials on the wiki.
Bruce – The presentation materials are on the PSRC. Search for ComPADRE doc.
Ramon – Lots of stuff on Adv Labs in Ann Arbor, so he hasn’t submitted a poster.
Ramon – Asked about PBS materials. How can we make use of these, and can we perhaps host the materials?
Bruce – WGBH is fairly careful about keeping control of these resources.
