NSDL Vocabularies

In work over this winter and spring, the NSDL and Pathways have agreed on a few of the vocabularies to be used to catalog materials. These are recommended best practices that we are encouraged to use.

ComPADRE will be implementing these in the near future, but we need to discuss how we are doing this and to what extent. Each have a "Best Practice" indicating recommendations, but we have some freedom to make it work for us.

Education Level

The first vocabulary considered and passed is Education Level. This one I voted against because of three of the "Best Practices":

  1. When selecting the major education level(s), choose terms to the finest level of granularity appropriate for the resource. If a resource only applies to Grade 2 then use that. If a resource applies to more grades, select as many grades as appropriate.
  2. When using the finer level terms, like Grade 10, include the broader group term as well (e.g. for Grade 10, also include High School).
  3. Do not choose every educational level that could be used with the resource. Focus on the major educational levels that the resource is generally intended to serve.

There are some additional terms beyond what we currently have that will be useful, including different levels of "Informal Education" (General Public in our current scheme) and "Vocational/Professional Development"

Resource Type

The second vocabulary considered and passed is what we call Resource Type. I think there are some good additions for us here, including different types of "Events" and "Reference Material".

Audience

The third vocabulary that they have just started to consider (June 23) is Audience. In its current form, it's very much like our current vocabulary.
