File Cabinet Discussions

Please use this page for general comments and discussions about the Filing Cabinet. Let's try to leave the main page as a list of features/needs/wants.

Content Sorting - This will probably be later rather than sooner. Bruce

Non-Compadre Content - Adding links (URLs) will be much easier than allowing users to upload content. Bruce

Restricted Sharing - This is hard, a complicated interface, and is for the future if at all. Bruce

Shared Editing - This is fairly hard, although using GROUPS may make this possible. Right now, shared editing can be done by creating a new account to which more than one user has access. Bruce

Folder Copy - Because of copyright issues, folder copying will require that we inform users that this is possible. We'll probably need to have them agree to a Creative Commons license. Bruce

Folder Templates - This may be covered by "Folder Copy". This also may be confusing for users. Bruce

I like the idea of having multiple interfaces (templates) designed for different functions. A course-related shared folder and a textbook related shared folder might be quite different. The back end would be the same but the front end for the course would have a syllabus, assignments, class notes, etc. A book shared folder would have a table of contents, pdf chapters, and chapter resources such as simulations and problems. Multiple front ends would let us experiment and I expect that we will find common ground for a general purpose interface. [Wolfgang] Response: We may have special purpose uses for the interface that have specific features (templates). What is listed here are the general filing cabinet functions for all users. Being able to copy a folder (and thus it's structure) may be sufficient for general use. Bruce

Purpose of the Filing Cabinet My concern is that we're expecting one interface to do too many things. I agree with Wolfgang about the attraction of multiple templates. Would it be possible to create certain templates that are accessible only to editors and staff? In my view, the top priority for a new template would be textbook alignment. Still, navigation among folders and ease of sharing is probably most important to our users. Caroline 08:50, 19 August 2009 (EDT)

Length of Annotations Using a limit of, say, (n = 100) would be good for most uses, but not for something like Model Units. High school teachers expect to see a template that looks similar to a block plan with objectives, standards, procedures, materials, warm-ups, etc. I can't fit all this in a limited space of 100 characters. Is it time to think about doing Model Units within the Units interface itself? Cathy?? Caroline 08:50, 19 August 2009 (EDT) Response: There will not be a 100 character limit on annotations. This is just the amount of the annotation that will show up when someone is looking at a list of folders or sub-folders. Once the folder is opened, the full annotation will be displayed. The goal is to give people more of an idea of what's in the folder before it is opened. Bruce
